3-2-1 Chart: A Free Nonfiction Reading Center

This year, my teaching partner and I are really switching up our reading block.  We’re working on our own, made up version of the Daily Five.  So far, we are in LOVE!
In the Daily Five, students would typically read with someone as part of their daily routine.  In fifth grade, we struggled with how to approach this and what would be the most beneficial for them.  We created a “Magazines with Friends” center.
 Need a new idea for reading centers? Finding an activity that will not only benefit your students and keep them engaged in reading centers can be difficult. Allowing kids to work with partners, read non fiction resources and use this FREE graphic organizer printable can help bring the joy back to reading. This printable helps teachers quickly reference what the students read and what information they pulled from resource. Be sure to grab this freebie! {reading activity, elementary, freebie}

At this center, students will read a magazine article of their choosing with a friend.  Between our two classrooms, we have subscriptions to National Geographic Kids, Scholastic News, and Time for Kids.  Last year, we both felt that they were wasted resources because we often didn’t have time in class to put them to good use.  If we sent them home, many of the kids admittedly threw them away.  UGH!  To remedy this, we are putting our magazines to use with a 3-2-1 Chart!

 They begin by writing the title of their article in the first box.  This allows us to follow up if needed.

Next, they record three things that they discovered while they read the article.  They can write them during or after their reading and can be the same or different from their partner.

Then, they record two interesting things.  These things can new facts that they picked up throughout the article or things that they already knew but were still interesting to them.

They finish up by writing one question that they still have!  My kids had such a blast with this today and are pumped to continue reading non-fiction articles throughout the school year.  If you would like to grab this 3-2-1 Chart, click the image below to download a PDF version!
